Greasbrough Park
About Greasbrough Park
Greasbrough Park was opened to the public in 1930. The park was developed to provide healthy recreation for the youth of the district, a quiet and pleasant place for the elderly and facilities for music and entertainment for all. Earl Fitzwilliam gifted three acres of land to Greasbrough Urban District Council to provide a pleasure park for the use of the public for all time. In order to create the park 30 local men were provided with jobs and the construction took around 5 months to complete.
During the 1960’s the park was further developed and extended. A stream known as the Ochre Dyke that flowed through the park was diverted underground and the footbridge relating to the stream was removed. A large area of allotments neighbouring the park were removed and the park was extended onto this land which is now a large lawn area with a children’s 5 a side football pitch and climbing boulders.
Between the 1980’s and 1990’s the original tennis courts and bowling green were removed, and, in their place, a new bowling green was constructed. The bowling green was created and dedicated to Arthur King who campaigned for its construction as a local green was demolished to make way for a new housing estate.
The Friends of Greasbrough Parks voluntary group was formed in 2011 and meet every month in the park pavilion. The groups aim is to restore, maintain, develop and improve Greasbrough’s green spaces to create an inviting environment for all age groups.
